How Poople Unlimited works

Full guide
  1. Look at the start word

Poople Unlimited hands you a random four-letter word, say TINS. The goal never changes: get to POOP.

  2. Change one letter

Type a word that's exactly one letter different, like TINS to TONS. It has to be a real word, and it has to be in our list.

  3. Land on POOP

Keep climbing until you hit POOP. Fewer steps is better, and if you match par you found the shortest route.

Example ladder: COIL, COOL, POOL, POOP COIL COOL POOL POOP I → OC → PL → P
Example: COIL to POOP in three steps.

What is Poople Unlimited?

Poople Unlimited is a small practice site for fans of Poople, the daily word ladder game. If you haven't played it: you're given a four-letter word, you change one letter at a time (every step has to be a real word), and you're trying to land on POOP. There's one puzzle a day. That's the charm, and also the problem if you finish in two minutes and want more.

That's where Poople Unlimited comes in. Hit New Puzzle in Poople Unlimited and you get a fresh start word, as many times as you like. The game quietly works out the shortest possible route and calls it par, so you can see how your ladder compared. There are three difficulty levels, a hint button for when you're properly stuck, and an undo for when you simply fat-fingered a letter. Your results stay in your browser. We never see them.

We made Poople Unlimited because we wanted it ourselves: a warm-up before the daily puzzle, a place to try a new strategy without burning the day's attempt, and somewhere to show a friend how the game works before they commit. It isn't made by the Poople team, and it doesn't try to replace the original.

Why play Poople Unlimited?

  • Unlimited rounds

Play as many rounds of Poople Unlimited as you like. No daily cap, no cooldown.

  • Three difficulty levels

Easy ladders in Poople Unlimited take three or four steps, Hard ones seven or eight. Switch whenever you like.

  • Hints that don't spoil it

The first tap tells you which letter to change. A second tap shows the word, if you really need it.

  • Hints and a solver

Want a nudge on the daily puzzle? Try Poople Hint Today. Want the full route? Drop any start word into the Poople Solver.

  • Track your progress

Rounds played, average steps and your streak are saved in your browser, so you can watch yourself improve at Poople Unlimited.

  • Made for phones too

Big keys, no zooming and nothing to install. Poople Unlimited plays just as well on a phone as on a laptop.

Stuck? Get a hint or ask the Poople Solver

Not sure about today's puzzle? Poople Hint Today gives you clues one at a time, and never the answer. If you would rather see everything, type any four-letter start word into the Poople Solver and it lists the shortest ways to POOP, with the changed letters highlighted. Both are handy after a round of Poople Unlimited, too.

Tips for better Poople Unlimited ladders

  • Work backwards from POOP. Words one step away, like POOL, POOR, COOP and LOOP, are your doorways. If you can reach one of them, you're nearly home.
  • Chase the double O. POOP wants OO in the middle, so a move that creates it is almost always progress.
  • Steer clear of odd words. A rare word with unusual letters usually has one or two neighbours, which means a dead end. Step through a common word instead.
  • Use par as your coach. After each round of Poople Unlimited, compare your steps with par and ask yourself where the detour began.
  • Start on Easy, even if you're good. The patterns you pick up on short ladders carry straight over to Hard.
  • Ask for a hint before the answer. Poople Hint Today opens clues one at a time, so you can stop as soon as you see the way.
  • Use the Solver to learn, not to cheat. Enter the word that beat you in the Poople Solver and read the shortest routes it finds.
  • Don't rush the first move. The first letter you change shapes the whole ladder, so give it a few seconds, even in Poople Unlimited's Easy mode.

Why practise Poople between daily puzzles?

The daily Poople puzzle rewards a little preparation. Every start word is a small map problem: which neighbours does it have, which of them lead to POOL, POOR, COOP or LOOP, and where are the dead ends? You only get one go a day, so you rarely see the same shape twice.

Poople Unlimited lets you rehearse those shapes. Play a few Easy rounds to get the gateway words into your fingers, move to Hard when you're ready for longer detours, and use par to find out whether your instincts are any good.

Then share your best ladder. The result card shows your route as coloured blocks without spoiling the words, and the link opens the same start word for whoever you send it to. It's the quickest way to find out which of your friends is the real Poople person.

Poople Unlimited FAQ

What is Poople Unlimited?

Poople Unlimited is a free, fan-made practice site for the Poople word ladder game. Press New Puzzle for a fresh start word whenever you like, so you are never stuck waiting for tomorrow.

Is Poople Unlimited free to play?

Yes, it is free, and there is no limit on how many rounds you can play.

Is Poople Unlimited the official Poople game?

No. It is an independent fan project and is not affiliated with Poople or its creators.

How do I win a round?

Change one letter at a time, making a real four-letter word at every step, until you reach POOP. Fewer steps is better, and matching par is as good as it gets.

What does par mean?

Par is the length of the shortest possible ladder from your start word to POOP. We work it out for every puzzle, so you can see how your own route compares.

Where can I get a Poople hint for today?

Open the Poople Hint Today page. It finds today's start word and opens clues one at a time, from how many steps the ladder takes to which letter to change, without showing the answer. If you want the whole route, the Poople Solver shows it.

Why was my word rejected?

Our word list is not identical to the one the original game uses, so now and then a word is accepted in one place and not the other. First check that you changed exactly one letter. If the Solver suggests a word the original game refuses, click the cross next to it and the Solver will find a route without it.

Does Poople Unlimited save my progress?

Yes, but only on your own device. Your current puzzle, your stats and any words you removed live in your browser, and we never send them to a server. Clearing your browser data wipes them.

How do I share my result?

Once you reach POOP, press Share. You get a colour-coded map of your route, which shows how many steps you took without giving the words away, plus a link that opens the same start word for your friends.

Can I play Poople Unlimited on my phone?

Yes. It works in any modern mobile or desktop browser, with big on-screen keys for touch and full keyboard support on a computer.

Ready for another round of Poople Unlimited?
